Material Distribution Center (MDC) – Supporting NIU Trades Personnel

The Material Distribution Center (MDC) plays a vital role in the daily support of NIU’s facilities maintenance operations ensuring personnel have the materials, tools and equipment needed to maintain a safe, functional and efficient campus environment.

Key Functions and Roles

Purchasing and Distribution of Materials

The MDC purchases and receives and distributes shipments of maintenance materials, repair parts, tools and equipment.

Inventory Management

The MDC maintains a stock of commonly used items like plumbing fixtures, HVAC components, electrical supplies, fasteners, safety gear and tools. By keeping essential items in stock, it helps minimize job delays and improves response times to campus maintenance needs.

Support for Projects and Emergencies

For planned projects, the MDC works with facilities maintenance staff to pre-stage materials.

During emergencies (e.g., weather damage, urgent repairs), it serves as a rapid response hub for critical supplies.
