Winter Break Housing

You've signed up for winter break housing.

Look in your student Z-ID email inbox for confirmation.

All residence halls will close at 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, for the fall term.

We offer winter break housing from Dec. 12 until Jan. 8 to students currently living in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall West. Students in these halls need to register for winter break housing.

If you live in another hall and would like to stay during winter break, winter break housing availability is limited and not guaranteed.

If you don't sign up for winter break housing, you'll need to leave your room and come back in the spring.

About Winter Break Housing

Can I stay during winter break?

You can stay in your current space during winter break if you:

  • Live in Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall West.
  • Have signed up for winter break housing (separate from your fall/spring housing contract).
  • Are living here in both fall 2020 and spring 2021.

If you live in Northern View, your contract already lets you stay through the break if you are living here in the spring.

Can I stay during winter break even if I don't live in Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall West?

Only current Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall West residents can sign up for winter break housing where they currently live.

Students from other residence halls will be assigned to a temporary space for the duration of the break. Those students placed in temporary assignments will NOT be able to access their fall room assignment during winter break. They will need to bring any critical items needed with them to their temporary space.

Will the halls be locked?

All residence halls will be locked during the break. Only students who have signed up for winter break housing will be able to use their NIU OneCard and hall entry card to enter their hall.

Main desks and the Northern View main office will be closed during the break.

What dining options are available?

Campus dining locations and the Huskie Food Pantry will be closed during the break, but here are some dining options:

Will mail be delivered?

U.S. mail will be distributed daily in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall West except on Sundays and official holidays. The front desks in Neptune Central and New Hall West will be open from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday for package pickup. Private delivery services like UPS or FedEx will not typically make deliveries during the break period.

Whom do I call if there is an issue in my hall during winter break?

The front desks in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall East will only be open from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. You can call your hall's front desk number to be connected to the hall staff on duty when the desk is closed.

What if I don't stay during winter break?

You must leave and return in the spring. Read about moving out for the fall.
