Winter Break Housing

You've signed up for winter break housing.

Look in your student Z-ID email inbox for a confirmation.

We offer winter break housing from Dec. 15 until Jan. 10 to students currently living in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall East.

If you live in another hall and would like to stay during winter break, winter break housing availability is limited and not guaranteed.

If you don't sign up for winter break housing, you'll need to leave your room and come back in the spring.

About Winter Break Housing

Can I stay during winter break?

You can stay during winter break if you:

  • Live in Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall East.
  • Have signed up for winter break housing (separate from your fall/spring housing contract).
  • Are living here in both fall 2019 and spring 2020.

If you live in Northern View, your contract already lets you stay through the break if you are living here in the spring.

Can I stay during winter break even if I don't live in Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall East?

Only current Neptune East, Neptune West or New Hall East residents can sign up for winter break housing where they currently live.

For other students, a short-stay option in the Holmes Student Center is available.

Will the halls be locked?

All residence halls will be locked during the break. Only students who have signed up for winter break housing will be able to use their NIU OneCard and hall entry card to enter their hall.

Main desks and the Northern View main office will be closed during the break.

What dining options are available?

Campus dining locations and the Huskie Food Pantry will be closed during the break, but here are some dining options:

Will mail be delivered?

U.S. mail will be distributed daily in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall East except on Sundays and official holidays. The front desks in Neptune West and New Hall East will be open from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday for package pickup. Private delivery services like UPS or FedEx will not typically make deliveries during the break period.

Whom do I call if there is an issue in my hall during winter break?

The front desks in Neptune East, Neptune West and New Hall East will only be open from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. You can call your hall's front desk number to be connected to the hall staff on duty when the desk is closed.

Can I have guests?

Yes, but you'll be responsible for escorting any guests you bring at all times.

What if I don't stay during winter break?

You must leave and return in the spring. Read about moving out for the fall.
