Latinx Living Learning Community

Bienvenidos a NIU! The Latinx Living Learning Community is here to support students who identify as Latino, Latina or Latinx and/or want to explore more about Latinx cultures and identity. Those living in this community can connect with peers, faculty and staff that serve as a support and resource.

Community Highlights

Activities

  • Events celebrating Latino American heritage and culture throughout the year
  • Early access to cultural exploration opportunities like group trips
  • Study tables at the Latino Center
  • Group social activities

As part of the community, you are required to take one Latino and Latin American Studies (LATS) course each semester. You will be able to choose from

  • LATS 100: Introduction to Latin American Studies
  • LATS 101: Introduction to Latinx Studies
  • LATS 400: Special Topics in Latino and/or Latin American Studies
  • And several other electives in other departments, such as HIST 374: Latinos/as in the United States, FLSP 315: Spanish for Heritage Speakers II, and LTIC 301: Teaching with a Multicultural Perspective

You can reach out to the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies prior to registering for classes to make sure that your course selection aligns with your major and meets the requirements of the Latinx Living-Learning Community. You are encouraged, though not required, to pursue the minor or certificate in Latino and Latin American Studies.
