In the gradebook, a category consists of one or more grade items. If you use a weighted grading system that weights a group of assessments together (e.g., 5 quizzes worth a total of 20% of the final grade), you must use categories in your overall grade calculation. You can also use categories for either point-based or weighted overall grade calculations to drop one or more assessments (e.g., drop the lowest quiz grade).
