Burnout 101: Understanding and Mitigating Burnout in Teaching and Learning Environments

by Rebecca Pope-Ruark, Georgia Tech
Wednesday, January 11, 2023, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Online

Levels of burnout among faculty across the country are high as we continue to deal with issues of pandemic, social unrest, and political strife. But understanding burnout and actively working to mitigate its effects on our lives and classrooms is possible. In this online institute, Dr. Rebecca Pope-Ruark will lead you through a series of activities and reflection opportunities to answer several questions:

  • What is burnout, and how might it be impacting your life and work?
  • How might students be experiencing burnout, and how might that be influencing classroom engagement?
  • How might reaffirming your purpose as a higher ed professional as well as reconnecting with your interests and students serve as a path away from burnout?
  • How can you talk about burnout with your colleagues and administrators to improve learning environments for everyone?

The Institute is open to all NIU faculty (including tenured / tenure-track, clinical, research, visiting, and instructional faculty), SPS, and Civil Service staff.
