When stakeholders perceive that classroom environments in academic buildings on campus are too hot, too cold and/or uncomfortably humid:
- Faculty, staff and student employees are advised to communicate with their immediate supervisor(s).
- Students are advised to communicate with faculty and/or department offices and/or the dean’s office.
- Faculty, staff and students are invited to communicate directly with Facilities Services.
- Facilities staff can be reached at 815-753-1741. If the call goes to voicemail, press zero and the call will forward to a live person.
This phone number and the work request form are available at Work Requests. Although using the phone number is encouraged if immediate attention is needed, the form can be used to document a request or report less time-sensitive issues. Any individual can call the number or complete a request.
When the temperature in a classroom or meeting room is too hot, too cold and/or uncomfortably humid for activities to continue:
- Students, faculty, and staff are advised to communicate their perception of this circumstance with the instructor-of-record or the supervisor(s) in charge of an activity.
- Faculty, staff and student employees in charge of an activity, including a class, should take immediate steps. They may:
- Temporarily change the location or modality – including with assistance from department staff and/or the associate vice president for Facilities and Resources at 815-753-6525 to find an alternative meeting room
- Reschedule the activity
- As a last resort, cancel the activity
When a Class Must Be Cancelled
- Faculty should follow local (typically, department or school-level) practice, which may include offering equivalent instructional content for the cancelled class session.
- The person in charge of the activity should document the temperature and humidity level, to the extent that local building facilities make it possible.
- Documentation should include reporting to a supervisor and reporting either directly or through their supervisor to facilities. Where building limitations compromise or prevent accurate documentation of temperature and humidity levels, college offices or facilities should be contacted either directly or through a supervisor so that the college offices or facilities can supply mobile temperature and humidity monitoring devices for accurate measurements in rooms where uncomfortable conditions are reported.
- Documentation has the intent of supporting building services in their correcting the temperature issue and/or allowing administrators to find an alternative location for future activities until the issue is resolved.
