Military and Veteran Services connects you with people and resources across campus and beyond. From academic support and counseling to VA benefits and community, explore the services that can help you succeed at NIU.

Military Student Advocacy

Military and Veteran Services is available to make referrals to campus resources, the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission and other veterans services offices throughout Illinois. We also assist military students in processing forms, understanding procedural requirements and certifying enrollment for federal and state benefits.

In addition, military students can seek assistance from NIU’s Office of the Ombudsperson.

NIU Veterans Association

The NIU Veterans Association supports the advancement of student veterans, their rights and their benefits through an environment of camaraderie, social activity and service to the community.

Air Force ROTC

Northern Illinois University has a crosstown agreement with University of Chicago, Det 195. Learn about Air Force ROTC classes through this agreement.

Career and Employment

VA Work Study Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be currently using federal military benefits
  • Must be in good academic standing with NIU
  • Must have a minimum of 12 months remaining in federal benefits
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week

Students’ Legal Assistance provides answers and support to:

  • Individual students who are called into active service
  • Students who are roommates of those called into active military service and living in off-campus housing

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at va.gov is the authoritative source for federal benefits, health care and crisis support. The resources below include VA services along with local and community options for military-connected students.

VA Health Care for Eligible Combat Veterans

  • Provides health care to combat veterans of OEF/OIF/OND for 10 years following the date of separation or date of discharge from active duty or, for reservists and National Guard, from date of discharge for the veteran’s most recent period of active federal service.
  • Provides cost-free health care and medications in most situations.
