Coronavirus and Recent Events Update

To our valued members and RecWell friends:

We hope that you and your family are remaining well. We really miss connecting with you in person. Especially at a time like this with the recent events in Minneapolis, across the country and here in DeKalb, we are missing the opportunity to stand in person with our community, to reinforce our values of equity and justice.

Please know that we condemn the actions of the police against George Floyd, and all the other Black Americans who have died at the hands of ignorance. Black lives matter, and we support NIU President Freeman's comments about confronting racism in our community, "I want the people of color in our community to know that NIU sees you and that NIU wants to be your community and a place where you have allies."

At RecWell, we are here to listen, support, and help create positive change. If you have ideas about how we can do that now while we remain virtual, or after we reopen, please let us know.

You're likely also wondering about that idea of reopening. Like all of NIU, we are following closely with the Restore Illinois plan that moved into Phase 3 as of Friday. With that guidance, our recreation facilities remain closed, so we continue to protect everyone's health and wellness. However, behind the scenes, we are developing reopening plans, and we'll continue communicating with you as things progress.

In the meantime, please continue connecting with us for virtual activities such as fitness classes on our Facebook and Instagram pages. You can also view the attached image for our highlighted national days and event offerings. Additionally, we are offering free virtual personal training for the summer, so if you'd like some guidance, please email Leanne Kulchawik at lkulchawik@niu.edu to set up your first session.

2020 certainly has had its share of challenges, but we continue to be here to support you and our community. Please take care of each other, take care of yourself and live well.

Are there any Recreation facilities open?

Not at this time. We are with you in supporting efforts for physical distancing and flattening the curve, so all Recreation and Wellness facilities are closed until further notice. We are working on plans to reopen as the university opens and as the state moves into Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois Plan.

When will the Recreation facilities re-open?

As noted above, we are watching the progress of the Restore Illinois Plan and are working to open our facilities. We will be following the guidelines of public health officials and will share with you how you can get active with us again once we reopen.

What's happening with my membership?

Once we know the length of the closure, we'll be extending all members' terms by that same time. This will be done automatically, so you won't need to do anything. If there's a reason that an extension won't work for you, please email recwell@niu.edu and we'll work with you to ensure you're taken care of as one of our valued members.

What's happening with my Fit Pass?

Please continue to join us for virtual fitness classes and maintain your active lifestyle. See our upcoming classes. For those who purchased a Spring 2020 Fit Pass, we're inviting you to take advantage of 75% off your fall Fit Pass*. If there's a reason that won't work for you, please email recwell@niu.edu before May 15 and we'll work with you to refund ½ of your spring 2020 pass. If we don't hear from you, we'll just make sure you get your 75% off for fall.

* applies to regular fall price, not early bird or annual pricing
What's happening with my Personal Training?

If you are a current personal training client, your personal trainer will be in touch with you to setup telephone or online supports. Your sessions will not expire. If there's a reason that continuing won't work for you, please email recwell@niu.edu and we'll work with you to ensure you're taken care of as one of our valued members.

Additionally, we are offering free virtual personal training for the summer. Email Leanne Kulchawik at lkulchawik@niu.edu to get started.

What's happening with my Nutrition Coaching?

If you are a current nutrition coaching client, your coach will be in touch with you to setup telephone or online supports. If there's a reason that continuing won't work for you, please email recwell@niu.edu and we'll work with you to ensure you're taken care of as one of our valued members.

What's happening with the program(s) I registered for?

We remain dedicated to inspiring your optimal health and well-being and are continuing to deliver some virtual programs and services. See our upcoming programs. All in-person RecWell programs are cancelled for the remainder of the semester. If you registered for one of those programs and have not already received a refund, please email recwell@niu.edu and we'll work with you to ensure you're taken care of as one of our valued members.

What's happening with my sport club activities?

Similar to all other sports and events, they are currently canceled to support physical distancing. Stay connected to your club Executive Board for further updates.

How do I stay active and well during this time?

We are gathering additional resources to help you stay active and well, so stay tuned to our Virtual Programs page and our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) for more information.

What if I still have questions?

Please email us at RecWell@niu.edu or reach out on our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). We are working behind the scenes, physically distanced, but still connected to our RecWell family!
