Student Steps to Success

  1. Research and contact employers. Check the list of attending companies to see who interests you. Consider your skills and interests, and the company's location and services/products. Send a resume and cover letter to employers of interest. Career Services can help you create these.
  2. Prepare your pitch. Write and practice a 45-second verbal summary of your education, experience and interests. Adapt it to specific job descriptions.
  3. Plan your outfit and materials. Wear conservative business attire. Gather copies of your resume (more than you think you'll need), a few copies of your transcript and a list of references.
  4. Attend the fair. Arrive early and visit employers you're most interested in first. Offer a handshake and a smile. Tell them you sent your resume in advance and give your verbal summary. Be sure to ask for a business card.
  5. Follow up. Mail or email a thank-you letter to the employers you met. Include your resume and any other requested documentation.
