Rubrics

A Rubric is a tool that lists evaluation criteria for an assignment. Rubrics can help students organize their efforts to meet the requirements of an assignment. Faculty can use Rubrics to explain their evaluations to students.

Rubrics are made up of rows and columns. The rows correspond to the various criteria of an assignment. The columns correspond to the level of achievement expressed for each criterion. A description and point value for each cell in the rubric defines the evaluation and score of an assignment.

You can create three types of rubrics in a course:

  • Percentage-based rubrics (and percentage-range)
  • Point-based rubrics (and point-range)
  • No Points

When you create or edit an assignment, journal, or discussion, you can create a new rubric in the Settings panel. You can also associate an existing rubric unless you have already entered grades for the item. You may associate only one rubric to each item.

You can view all of the rubrics in your course in the Gradebook settings. Rubrics cannot be edited once they have been used for grading, even when associated with a new assessment.

Generate a Rubric with AI

In addition to building a rubric manually, you can also generate a rubric using the AI Design Assistant. The AI will use the context for the assessment, including your instructions or prompt, to generate the criteria and descriptors. You can modify the rubric once it has been generated.
