Northern Illinois University offers delicious cuisine and multiple service styles. Our ballroom—the largest in DeKalb County—holds up to 500 people for your dream event. Whether your plans include a simple celebration or a seated, multi-course meal, the culinary team will assist you in creating the most elegant experience for your guests. Picking a Date

NIU has multiple venues to meet your event needs. Please contact us to check availability. Venues are located in the Holmes Student CenterAltgeld Hall and the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center.

Guest Count Guarantees

Event preparations are based on the specific number of guests. At the time of booking, we ask for an estimated count. The final guaranteed guest count and meal breakdown must be provided one week in advance of your event.

Deposit and Payment

A deposit is required to put a hold on a room and reserve our services for your event. Ask your event planner about additional payment options. A portion of your total bill (80%) is due 30 days in advance. A final bill will be sent after your event concludes. Acceptable forms of payment include cash, check and all major credit cards.

Food and Beverage Policy

All food and beverages must be arranged through NIU Catering Services. Our policy does not permit other caterers or foodservice vendors to operate in the building, with the exception of wedding cakes from an approved provider. Any leftover food and beverages remain the property of Catering Services and may not be removed from the premises.

Food and nonalcoholic beverages must accompany all events where alcohol is served. Alcohol may not be consumed or carried in open containers in the public areas or lounges in the venue halls.

NIU Catering Services provides alcohol in accordance with university policies and state law. All alcoholic beverages must be provided by Catering Services and can only be served by NIU employees. Proof of age will be required to serve your guests. Catering Services reserves the right to refuse service of alcohol to any person.

Event Length and Service Staff

All weddings and special events must end at midnight. Bar services must end 30 minutes prior to the event end time. Bar services can go no longer than five hours and cannot exceed four continuous hours of service.

Sales Tax and Other Charges

A 12% delivery charge will be added to any catering services outside of the Holmes Student Center. Price quotes do not include applicable taxes of 10%.
