We offer Off-Campus Student Meal Plans that combine Dining Dollars and meals to provide flexibility to commuters and students living off campus. You can use meals seven days a week at any of the All You Care To Eat dining centers. Dining Dollars are accepted at all Campus Dining locations across campus. You can also use your allocated meals and Dining Dollars to treat friends and family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?

Use the online sign-up portal, you'll be given the option of selecting one of these plans.

Am I able to sign up for a meal plan?

To purchase any of these plans, you must be a current-enrolled, matriculating student for the concurrent semester that the plan is purchased.

How and when do I pay for a meal plan?

Your meal plan will be billed to your NIU Bursar's account along with your room rate. See due dates.

How can I change my meal plan if I already signed up?

You can change your plan by sending an email from your student Z-ID email account to housing@niu.edu and  dining@niu.edu.

Deadlines for requesting changes:

  • If you added your meal plan before the semester started, you have ten business days from the start of the semester to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your meal plan. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.
  • If you added your meal plan on or after the first day of the semester, you have ten business days from the date you added your plan to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel it. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.

What meal plan should I select?

This depends on how often you plan on eating on campus, and where you would like to eat. Prefer the dine-in experience in our All You Care to Eat dining centers? A larger Block Plan is a great choice with more meals to use. Prefer to grab food on-the-go, or fancy a coffee every morning before class? A smaller Block Plan, or Dining Dollars Level Plans provide flexibility to let you eat at all on campus locations .

What is Meal Exchange?

Meal Exchange offers the ability for Huskie Block plans to choose dining options from a retail dining center. In locations like Stevenson Retail Dining use one of your meal swipes for a combination of items like a sandwich, chips, and a drink. Locations offering meal exchange will list what items are eligible to be combined for one meal swipe. This option has been expanded for the Spring 2021 semester to include The Depot C-Store, the Grill at Huskie Den, Caribou Coffee & Einstein Bros. Bagels, and QDOBA.

What is the To-Go meal program?

For the Spring 2021 semester, all meals in Neptune and New Hall Dining will be packaged to-go.

All students with a meal plan are eligible to use the To-Go program key tags and exchange in unit for the reusable container. Those students that do not use a key tag will receive disposable containers.

I'm running low on my meal swipes or Dining Dollars, can I add more?

If you run out of meal swipes or Dining Dollars during the semester, you can always refill by selecting the same plan again, or another plan from the list above. Refill a meal plan online.

When do unused meals or Dining Dollars expire?

For Huskie Block Plans, unused meals and Dining Dollars both expire at the end of the semester.

For Dining Dollars Level Plans, any unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of the academic year, ending with the spring semester.

What are Huskie Bucks, and do I need them?

Huskie Bucks are another way to pay for meals but are not part of a meal plan. Huskie Bucks are also used for printing/copying on campus. You can deposit funds into your Huskie Bucks account at any time. Learn more about Huskie Bucks.
