When you live on campus, you don't have to worry about buying groceries. Included in your room and board rate is the Huskie Block 12 meal plan with 12 meals per week and 100 Dining Dollars for additional meals throughout the semester. This meal plan lets you choose from a variety of locations across campus. For an additional cost, you can select a larger plan. Dining Dollars can be added to any meal plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?

When you select a room, you'll be given the option of selecting one of these plans.

How and when do I pay for a meal plan?

Your meal plan will be billed to your NIU Bursar's account, as it is included in your room and board rate. See due dates.

How can I change my meal plan if I already signed up?

You can change your plan online using the helpful form at go.niu.edu/meal-plan-change. You will be able to see your current selection, or will be prompted to make a selection, as well as the ability to change your meal plan. Use your student Z-ID and password to log in.

Deadlines for requesting changes:

  • If you added your meal plan before the semester started, you have ten business days from the start of the semester to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your meal plan. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.
  • If you added your meal plan on or after the first day of the semester, you have ten business days from the date you added your plan to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel it. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.

What is Meal Exchange?

Meal Exchange offers the ability for Huskie Block plans to choose dining options from a retail dining center. In locations like Stevenson Retail Dining or Dog Pound C-Store, use one of your meal swipes for a combination of items like a sandwich, chips, and a drink. Locations offering meal exchange will list what items are eligible to be combined for one meal swipe.

What is the To-Go meal program?

A program for any student on a Huskie Block Plan to fill an eco-friendly, sturdy, reusable container and take their food to-go.

Take To-Go from Gilbert, Neptune, and New Hall.

Return dirty but empty container and receive a new, clean container or key tag for the next time you wish to take To-Go.

One-time fee of $4 the first time you wish to take to-go. Lost containers or key tags will result in another $4 charge.

See more information on the To-Go program

When do unused meals or Dining Dollars expire?

In the Huskie Block Plan, unused meals expire at the end of the week, and unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of the semester.

In the Huskie Classic Plan, Dining Dollars are not part of the meal plan. If you have a Huskie Classic Plan and wish to add Dining Dollars to combine with your meal plan, select one of the Dining Dollar Level Plans available to you.

With the Dining Dollar Level plans, any unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of the academic year.

What are Huskie Bucks, and do I need them?

Huskie Bucks are another way to pay for meals but are not part of a meal plan. Huskie Bucks are also used for laundry services and printing/copying on campus. You can deposit funds into your Huskie Bucks account at any time. Learn more about Huskie Bucks.
