At Campus Dining Services, we support sustainability by lowering our environmental footprint. We serve 2.3 million meals every year, so we take many measures to reduce waste, use less energy and resources, and recycle materials when we can.

In accordance with applicable state law (30 ILCS 500/55-20) the purpose of this Policy is to establish the allowance of donations of unutilized leftover food purchased with state funds to local food pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations. Food purchases shall include purchases made by the university for campus dining, campus events, catering, retail outlets, and convenience stores at all NIU campuses.
Food products must meet local health department standards and must be prepared and stored following proper safety guidelines established by the applicable county health department prior to donation.
The following is a list of agencies that may be recipients of donated food:
These agencies are suggested donation sites although other local food pantries, soup kitchens and non-profit organization are eligible recipients of donations. Determination of agencies receiving donations shall be made by the Executive Director of Campus Dining or their respective designee.
In accordance with the law, this food donation policy shall be communicated to all university employees on an annual basis. Further, a copy of this policy shall be filed with the State of Illinois, Department of Central Management Services no later than December 31st of each year or until otherwise revoked or changed by law.
