Teaching and Learning Grants

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) supports faculty innovation and student success through grant-funded initiatives that advance teaching excellence, inclusive learning environments and curricular innovation.

CITL administers and collaborates on grant programs that support course redesign, instructional experimentation, and evidence-based teaching practices across disciplines.

Belong in STEM Grant

NSF S-STEM faculty development initiative

CITL is a partner in NIU’s Belong in STEM initiative, part of a National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) grant supporting student success in STEM.

As part of this project, CITL leads faculty development focused on inclusive STEM teaching, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and course redesign to help create more supportive and accessible learning environments.

The initiative includes faculty workshops, instructional design partnerships, and learning-community support for STEM faculty.

Curricular Innovation Grants

Internal faculty grant program

Curricular Innovation Grants provide support for NIU faculty who want to experiment with innovative teaching methods and redesign courses to enhance student learning.

Projects may focus on active learning, digital learning, virtual reality, open educational resources, interdisciplinary course design, inclusive teaching practices, and other innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Grant recipients receive summer support, funding for materials, and guidance from CITL staff to help develop and implement their innovations.

How CITL Supports Grant-Funded Teaching Innovation

Across grant initiatives, CITL provides expertise and support to help faculty design effective learning experiences and connect faculty with institutional supports for assessing the impact of instructional innovation.

  • Instructional design consultation
  • Course redesign support
  • Faculty workshops and learning communities
  • Support for inclusive and evidence-based teaching practices
  • Evaluation of teaching innovations
  • Dissemination of effective practices across campus

These grant-funded efforts help advance NIU’s goals of improving student success, strengthening inclusive teaching and encouraging innovation in curriculum and instruction.
