Holds on Student Accounts

As you prepare to register for classes, it’s important to know if one or more holds have been placed on your account. You won’t be able to register until all holds are removed.

To see if there are any holds on your account, log in to MyNIU and select MyNIU Student Center. Any holds will be located on the right side of the screen, next to your schedule. To view information on a hold, click the Details button next to or below the hold.

There are several reasons why one or more holds may be placed on your account. The most common holds are listed below, along with information about how to get them removed.

If the balance due on your account is more than $500, a financial hold will be placed on your account.

To get the hold removed, make the payment due on your account. For information on making payments, visit the Office of the Bursar.

The hold will be removed automatically when you make your payment. In some cases, the hold will need to be removed manually. If the hold does not come off your account after you make your payment, contact the Office of the Bursar for assistance.

You may also contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office or meet with a tuition counselor in the Office of the Bursar to review your financial options.

If you haven’t taken the online Title IX/Sexual Misconduct training, a Title IX hold will be placed on your account. This training is available in Blackboard Learn.

To get the hold removed, complete Title IX training by accessing Blackboard Learn. After you complete the training, the hold should be removed within 48 hours.

For more information, contact the Office of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at adei-training@niu.edu.

If you haven’t completed part one of NIU’s online alcohol education module, an AlcoholEdu hold will be placed on your account.

To get the hold removed, complete part one of the training. Visit go.niu.edu/AlcoholEdu, click on the link for AlcoholEdu and log in.

After you complete the training, the hold will be removed within 12 to 24 hours. If the hold is still in place after 24 hours, contact Recreation and Wellness at 815-753-9767 or BeWell@niu.edu for assistance. Be sure to include your name and Z-ID.

A student conduct hold will be placed on your account for the following reasons:

  • You’ve refused to participate in an ongoing Title IX investigation.
  • You haven’t completed sanctions related to a finding of responsibility for a Title IX incident.
  • You’ve been banned from campus, and the hold is in place to prevent registration during the period of banishment.
  • You owe the Student Conduct office sanctions that must be completed from an off-campus entity before you return to campus.

The process for getting the hold removed depends on the reason for the hold. To determine this, refer to the paperwork you received from the Student Conduct office related to your conduct case.

If nothing is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed automatically on the expiration date. If something is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed when the office receives the appropriate documentation. Holds will be removed within one business day.

For more information, contact the Student Conduct office at 815-753-1571 or judicial@niu.edu.
