Holds on Student Accounts

As you prepare to register for classes, it’s important to know if one or more holds have been placed on your account. You won’t be able to register until all holds are removed.

To see if there are any holds on your account, log in to MyNIU and select MyNIU Student Center. Any holds will be located on the right side of the screen, next to your schedule. To view information on a hold, click the Details button next to or below the hold.

There are several reasons why one or more holds may be placed on your account. The most common holds are listed below, along with information about how to get them removed.

All students are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or an approved medical or religious exemption prior to enrollment for in-person classes and other in-person educational opportunities for the 2022 spring semester.

To provide proof of vaccination or request a medical or religious exemption, log in to myniu.niu.edu, select the My Forms tile, and submit the appropriate form.

Completing the COVID-19 Enrollment Attestation form in MyNIU will remove the COVID-19 registration hold from your account. However, if it is determined that you have registered for in-person education and have not provided your proof of being fully vaccinated (two doses of Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna or AstraZeneca/Oxford, or the one dose of Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)) or received approved exemption prior to January 7, 2022, you will be removed from any in-person classes for the Spring 2022 semester on that day.

If there is a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement hold on your account, you need to complete the agreement before you can register.

To have the hold removed, please visit your MyNIU account to complete the Student Financial Responsibility Agreement. Instructions on how to complete the agreement are available online as well.

The hold will be removed immediately after the agreement has been completed.

For more information, contact the Office of the Bursar at bursar@niu.edu.

If the balance due on your account is more than $500, a financial hold will be placed on your account.

To get the hold removed, make the payment due on your account. For information on making payments, visit the Office of the Bursar.

The hold will be removed automatically when you make your payment. In some cases, the hold will need to be removed manually. If the hold does not come off your account after you make your payment, contact the Office of the Bursar for assistance.

You may also contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office or meet with a tuition counselor in the Office of the Bursar to review your financial options.

A student conduct hold will be placed on your account for the following reasons:

  • You’ve refused to participate in an ongoing Title IX investigation.
  • You haven’t completed sanctions related to a finding of responsibility for a Title IX incident.
  • You’ve been banned from campus, and the hold is in place to prevent registration during the period of banishment.
  • You owe the Student Conduct office sanctions that must be completed from an off-campus entity before you return to campus.

The process for getting the hold removed depends on the reason for the hold. To determine this, refer to the paperwork you received from the Student Conduct office related to your conduct case.

If nothing is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed automatically on the expiration date. If something is due to the Student Conduct office, the hold will be removed when the office receives the appropriate documentation. Holds will be removed within one business day.

For more information, contact the Student Conduct office at 815-753-1571 or judicial@niu.edu.

If you haven’t provided Health Services with a copy of your immunization record, a health services hold will be placed on your account. Learn more about NIU’s immunization requirements.
