Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

In response to the rapidly changing developments related to COVID-19, we have made the decision to adapt our services to a non-face-to-face format. We will be monitoring email throughout this period and will respond to you in a timely manner. If you have any questions or need additional information please contact us at

You can request an official or unofficial transcript. Please allow two to three business days to process transcript requests.

Get Your Official Transcript

Official transcripts are issued by the Office of the Registrar. Transcript requests are ordered online and are processed within 1-3 business days.

You can request a paper transcript to be sent through the mail or an electronic transcript to be sent electronically in PDF format. A signed consent form is required to complete the online process. The form will be generated during the process.

If you are a student who attended Northern Illinois University prior to 1987, an electronic version of your transcript is not available in a PDF format.

If you have forms that need to be sent with your transcript, you can upload those during the ordering process.

  • $11.50 for electronic transcript
  • $10.50 for paper transcript

Transcripts will not be released for academic records that are subject to an encumbrance. Examples of encumbrances are:

  • Past due financial obligations to the university, such as unpaid tuition, fees or fines.
  • Incomplete admissions requirements, such as missing transcripts or test scores.
  • Disciplinary action

If you are a current student, you can check your encumbrances on MyNIU under the “Holds” heading in your Student Center.

Sending Someone to Pick Up Your Transcript

If you need to send someone to pick up your transcript you must fill out a third-party transcript request form.

You should instruct your friend that they will need to bring their own photo ID with them when they present these two documents to us. Otherwise, we will not release your transcript. If your record has an encumbrance, we will not release your transcript.

Get Your Unofficial Transcript

If you are a former student who was last enrolled prior to fall 2008 and need an unofficial transcript, you can visit our office with a photo ID and we will print one for you. If you are not in the area, you can mail us a signed request for an unofficial transcript and we will mail one back to you.
