Faculty Teaching Mentors
We are excited to announce the launch of a new initiative aimed at continuing to foster excellence in teaching and learning at NIU. As part of our ongoing commitment to faculty development and student success, we invite you to self-nominate as a Faculty Teaching Mentor who will provide guidance and teaching support to fellow faculty members.
The Faculty Teaching Mentors are a team of experienced and knowledgeable faculty (tenure track, instructional, or clinical) who are available to provide advice, recommendations and mentoring to their colleagues on teaching.
This new program, being piloted for the 2024-2025 academic year, aims to build a vibrant teaching community at NIU and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to our university’s teaching excellence while gaining professional recognition and development.
Who Should Apply?
- Any faculty member (tenure-track, instructors, or teaching staff) with a passion for teaching and a willingness to share their expertise.
- Faculty who have experience in specialized areas such as teaching general education courses, closing academic equity gaps, teaching community-engaged courses, or facilitating large enrollment or asynchronous online courses.
- Previous award-winning faculty and those who have completed the ACUE Effective Teaching Practices program are particularly encouraged to apply.
What Does the Role Involve?
Faculty Teaching Mentors will:
- Offer mentorship to colleagues seeking to enhance their teaching practices.
- Share your teaching strategies and insights in your areas of expertise.
- Be available for one-on-one consultations as your schedule permits, scheduled using a web-based appointment scheduler.
- Participate in training or professional development designed to enhance mentoring skills.
Recognition and Support
- All Faculty Teaching Mentors will be officially recognized and listed on a dedicated webpage, showcasing their areas of expertise.
- You may also be eligible for nomination for the new Outstanding Teaching Mentor Award that is being established.
How to Apply
Please complete the brief self-nomination form to express your interest and provide information about your teaching experience and areas of expertise. The selection process will involve consultation with the Innovative Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee (ITLAC) and the Office of the Provost.
Deadline: Please submit your self-nomination by Friday, August 25th.
