NIU Grounds is embracing sustainable landscaping designs through the implementation of native perennial garden beds. In partnership with Campus Sustainability and the NIU Biological Sciences Montgomery Greenhouse, hundreds of native perennial plants grow over the winter months for planting in the spring. Along with seed starting, native seed mixes are being spread areas to reduce mulch and mowing needs.
Over 80 species will be planted, making NIU an oasis for pollinators
5 to 10 garden beds will be converted to native perennial plants each year
Native perennials require less water and maintenance, while providing year-round visual appeal.
