Teaching Expertise and Approach

Brianno teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering. He describes his approach to teaching with these key principles:

Growth mindset. Learning is difficult and takes effort. It is OK for learners (and teachers) to make mistakes. Turn the mistakes into opportunities for growth and improvement. Design a learning environment with this in mind.

Treat teaching like a design problem. Try new things. Collect data to measure effectiveness. Reflect. Get student feedback. Use information to make improvements.

Connect the topic one is teaching to something real interesting. Find the wonder and joy in the subject. Give students authentic learning tasks, whenever possible, rather than stale textbook assignments.
