Local Transportation Resources

NIU's campus sustainability plan commits to identifying ways to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from staff and students who commute to campus. Whenever possible, making use of alternative forms transportation can help to achieve this goal.

Bus

The Huskie Bus Line is operated by the City of DeKalb, with a routes stopping on and off campus. Current NIU students, faculty or staff members ride for free by showing their NIU OneCard.

The Elburn Shuttle (Route 12 of the Huskie Bus Line) goes to the Metra train station in Elburn.

Carpool

NIU staff and students can connect with other Huskies to share a ride to and from campus via Carpool Connections.

Bike

There are several bike trails that connect NIU's main campus to the City of DeKalb, as shown on this bike map (PDF).

You are encouraged to register your bike with NIU's Department of Public Safety. Registering your bicycle helps the police to identify your bicycle if it is ever lost or stolen and reunite it with the rightful owner.
