Kaltura Lecture Capture Quick Guide

Lecture capture can be useful for creating a recording of a class session for students to review when studying. The recordings can also be helpful for students who are unable to attend class. Kaltura Capture is one of many tools that can be used for lecture capture.

To create a lecture capture recording with Kaltura Capture:

  1. Arrive early to the classroom, be sure the classroom PC is on and logged in.
  2. Open any browser and log into Blackboard. Access Kaltura from the Tools page in the left-hand navigation.
  3. To begin a new recording, click the Add New button and choose Kaltura Capture.
  4. The first time you launch Kaltura Capture in each classroom, you will be prompted to download the Kaltura Capture application. Click the appropriate link to download the software and install. This first time only, you may need to close the Blackboard pane by clicking the red X in the upper left after the software has installed and re-select Kaltura My Media from the Tools page. Click the Add New button again and choose Kaltura Capture.
  5. A recording tool panel will appear. Use the record panel to configure your recording.
    1. Select which screen to record. For simplicity, we recommend capturing the entire screen for lecture capture. This will record anything that you display on the computer to your students.
    2. Select or deselect the camera. Depending on the configuration of the classroom, you may not be able to record the camera.
    3. Verify your audio is working by speaking into your microphone and looking for movement on the microphone button image. If your classroom has a wide range microphone, such as a webcam, Meeting Owl, or a J5 Create camera, you will not need to use a separate microphone. You may want to record a short test recording to ensure that your microphone is being picked up.
    4. Click the Manage link to manage the settings of the recorder (on the tab with a gear icon). For example, if you will be playing audio or video on the computer that you want to include in the recording, check that the Record system audio setting is enabled.
  6. When you have the Kaltura Capture application configured, click the red button to begin recording.
  7. While recording, you have several options available in the recording panel:
    1. Pause and resume recording. This is especially helpful if there are portions of your class that aren't conducive to being recorded, such as active learning exercises or breaks.
    2. Open the annotation panel using the pencil icon. This allows you to annotate your screen during the lecture capture.
    3. Minimize the recording panel. This prevents the recording application from being visible in the recording and in class.
    4. Stop the recording. This stops the recording and displays the Kaltura Capture application.
  8. When class has ended and you have stopped the recording, edit the recording information, including Title, Description, and tags if desired.
  9. Click Save and Upload to upload the recording to your Kaltura My Media page. Your recording will begin to upload; you can see the progress in the Capture application.
  10. Return to your Kaltura My Media page. Your new recording should be visible, though it will likely be processing for some time (usually as long as the recording itself).
