Safety Services

Huskie Safe Bus Line

Route 11 of the Huskie bus line is the Huskie Safe Line. It operates seven days a week, from midnight to 7 a.m., and is free to NIU students.

Safe Walk

If you feel unsure about walking alone on campus, the NIU Safe app has several features that can help:

  • Mobile Blue Light: shares your location with NIU police
  • Virtual Walk Home: allows a police dispatcher to track you as you walk to a specific location
  • Friend Walk: allows a friend to track you until you reach your destination

Motorist Assistance

NIU police provide the following assistance to drivers:

  • On the DeKalb campus, we unlock car doors and jump-start dead car batteries for all community members.
  • In the areas surrounding the DeKalb campus, we unlock car doors and jump-start dead car batteries for students, staff and faculty.

Call our non-emergency number (815-753-1212) for assistance. If we're unable to help, we'll help you contact another service provider.

Lost and Found

Our lost-and-found program, located at 375 Wirtz Drive, is open 24 hours a day. While there are multiple such programs across campus, ours maintains sensitive identification and/or financial property, such as ID and banking cards, that have been found by officers or turned in by other departments.

Our officers review the items for identification and cross-reference the information with the databases at our disposal, such as our electronic device registration. When the owner is identified, reasonable attempts are made to return the property.

Report a lost item.

Bicycle Registration

Registering your bike makes it easier to identify and return if it's ever lost or stolen. Just fill out the DeKalb Police Department's bike registration form, and you'll receive an identifying sticker to put on your bicycle.

Information about registered bikes is kept in a database, providing a way to return them to their rightful owners.

Special Event Staffing

Our department plays an integral role in the review process, helping ensure events are appropriately staffed and that potential safety concerns are addressed.

Safe Selling

If you sell something online and need somewhere to meet the buyer, use our safe selling space.

Outreach and Engagement

We connect with our community in several ways, including presentations and opportunities to experience what it's like to be a police officer. Learn more about ourtreach and engagement programs.
