All NIU email addresses are automatically enrolled in the university's safety notification system. To receive text messages (when that delivery method is appropriate), you must provide a mobile phone number through MyNIU. You can also download the NIU Safe app to receive safety notifications on your mobile device.
The NIU Safe app is used by large college campuses nationwide and provides safety tools for students, faculty and staff.
With the NIU Safe app, you can receive weather and safety warnings, request police assistance, use walking safety features that allow friends or police to track your progress, and access the ETA Spot bus tracker. The app also connects to Huskie Safe Line for free late-night bus rides from midnight to 7 a.m.
Please note: Not all safety notifications are sent via text message. Depending on the situation, notifications may be distributed through multiple communication channels. Text messages are sent from 23-7233 (BE SAFE).
Instructions for receiving NIU Alert text messages differ by user type.
Students who provide a mobile phone number in MyNIU are automatically registered to receive NIU Alert text messages, in addition to email notifications.
Faculty and staff who add a mobile phone number through the HR self-service portal are automatically registered to receive NIU Alert text messages.
Students may register up to two additional contacts to receive NIU Alerts.
Important: Only NIU Alerts are sent to this group. Safety Warnings and Community Awareness messages are not included.
You may repeat this process to add a second contact.
