NIU has several policies and guidelines related to campus and community safety and security, including:
Concealed Carry
Illinois legislation allows qualified people to carry concealed firearms but prohibits the carrying of firearms on college campuses. Therefore, guns are prohibited on NIU's campuses in DeKalb, Naperville and Rockford. Only sworn law enforcement personnel are allowed to possess a gun on NIU campuses.
We offer temporary weapon storage for concealed carry permit holders while on the DeKalb campus. The storage lockers are located at 375 Wirtz Drive and can secure both pistols and long guns.
If found in possession of a gun while on campus, you'll be subject to arrest and criminal prosecution, as well as possible expulsion from the university and/or termination from employment.

Smoke-free Campus
The Illinois Smoke-Free Campus Act prohibits smoking on the campuses of all state-supported institutions of higher education, including public universities and community colleges. This policy helps reduce the effects of secondhand smoke and decreases smoking rates. It applies to everyone on the NIU campus, including:
- Students
- Faculty and staff
- Visitors, guests and the public
- Contractors, subcontractors and vendors

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
The Clery Act requires colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to disclose information about crimes that occur on or near campus. This helps students to be more aware of area crime, so they can take action to stay safe.
Each year, we collect data about crimes committed on and near campus, as well as resources devoted to safety. The data is compiled into an annual report and made available to the public. The report also provides information on campus partnerships and the ways we keep NIU safe.
