Reporting

Members of the NIU and DeKalb communities have many options for reporting crimes, concerns and other issues. If you need assistance or want to make a report, you can contact NIU Police and Public Safety and/or the following agencies, which have authority in the DeKalb campus area:

• City of DeKalb Police Department
• DeKalb County Sheriff's Office
• Illinois State Police

If you're concerned about the safety of a student or employee, call 911 (for emergencies) or our nonemergency number: 815-753-1212.

Anonymous Reporting

Each local agency provides a tip line or another way to make a report without revealing your name. If you're not sure which agency to contact, start with the NIU police, and we'll assign your tip to the proper agency.

• NIU police tip line: Call 815-753-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online to report illegal activities and/or violations of the Student Code of Conduct. You may receive a cash reward.
• DeKalb police tip line: Call 815-673-7603 or send a text message to 67283. Begin your message with “AlertDeKalb.”
• DeKalb County Sheriff's Office tip line: Call 815-895-3272 or email crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org.
• Illinois State Police: Visit the Illinois State Crime Stoppers Association website or the Crime Stoppers International website.

Sexual Misconduct Reporting

NIU provides information and resources on responding to and preventing sexual misconduct, including different options for reporting incidents to the police and/or university.

Concerns About Campus Facilities

Our officers regularly patrol campus and report unsafe physical conditions to be addressed by Facilities Management and Campus Services. If you notice an issue with campus grounds or facilities (for example, a broken streetlight), contact Facilities Management at workorder@niu.edu or 815-753-1741.

Concerns or Compliments About Police Officers

We take feedback about our officers very seriously and encourage you to share your thoughts:
