The Northern Illinois University Department of Police and Public Safety is responsible for monitoring sex offenders and sexual predators on campus.
The Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act (730 ILCS 150/3) requires any sex offender or sexual predator employed by or attending an institution of higher education to register within three days of beginning school or establishing employment.
Registration is required in person within three days with both local law enforcement and NIU Police.
Where Registration Is Required
- The chief of police in the municipality where the person attends or is employed
- Or the county sheriff if no municipal police chief exists
- The public safety or security director of the institution (NIU Police)
How to Register by Campus

If you will be on multiple campuses, you are responsible for making the proper notifications for each campus. Sex offenders may also have restricted access to certain areas such as parks and childcare centers.
Illinois Sex Offender Database
The federal Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act requires institutions of higher education to provide information on where the public may access sex offender registry information.
In Illinois, the Illinois State Police maintain a statewide Sex Offender Database. Members of the NIU community may obtain information using the Illinois Sex Offender Database.

Report Concerns
If you believe a sex offender or sexual predator has violated a law, contact the police department in the area where the violation occurred.
