International Student Orientation

The International Student Orientation is for all newly admitted graduate and undergraduate international students. As a new international student at NIU, you must attend an orientation prior to the start of your first semester. At orientation, you will meet other students who are new to or currently attending NIU. Orientation will answer many questions you might have and will save you significant confusion.

Orientation for international students starts one week before classes begin and continue throughout the entire week. During this very important week, we will provide you with valuable information about how NIU operates.

Orientation Topics

  • Immigration Regulations
  • International Student Employment Rules
  • Applying for a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Applying for a Driver's License

All new international students must officially check-in to our office in order to activate their SEVIS immigration record. The check-in process will be done remotely through the blackboard orientation platform.
