International Student Orientation

The International Student Orientation is for all newly admitted graduate and undergraduate international students. As a new international student at NIU, you must attend an orientation prior to the start of your first semester. At orientation, you will meet other students who are new to or currently attending NIU. Orientation will answer many questions you might have and will save you significant confusion.

The online portion of International Student Orientation opens approximately 30 days before the start of classes. Please register using the form below so that we can grant you access to the ISSS System to complete the modules.

In-person orientation for international students starts one week before classes begin and continue throughout the entire week. During this very important week, we will provide you with valuable information about how NIU operates.

Orientation Topics

  • Immigration Regulations
  • International Student Employment Rules
  • Applying for a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Applying for a Driver's License

Upon arrival in the U.S., all new international students must officially check in to our office in order to activate their SEVIS immigration records. The check-in process will be done in the ISSS System. Failure to complete check-in may have a negative impact on the student's immigration status.
