J-1 Employment Options

On-campus Employment

J-1 students can work on-campus but you must receive authorization from ISSS or your program sponsor (for example, Fulbright) who issued your DS-2019. You can work up to 20 hours per week.

Academic Training

Academic training is off-campus work authorization for employment that is directly related to your major field of study that is authorized by ISSS or your program sponsor. Academic training can be authorized for either during or after the course of your studies.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be in a valid J-1 student program
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Have a job offer letter (You cannot start working until the DS-2019 with authorization is in your hands.)

Your employment may be authorized for the length of time necessary to complete the goals and objectives of the training. This time must be approved by your academic advisor and ISSS advisor

Your employment may not exceed the amount it took for you to complete your full course of study, or 18 months, whichever is shorter. If you receive a Ph.D., your post-doctoral training may last as long as 36 months, provided you have a position.

Part-time employment counts against your time limit the same as full-time employment. Academic training used before completion of studies will be deducted from the total number of months allowed.

How to Apply

During your studies, you must provide ISSS with: If applying after your studies, you must provide the same documents as above. Apply before the end date on your DS-2019. Your job must begin no more than 30 days after you complete the program.
