Living with Roommates
Having a roommate is an important part of student life for many Huskies.
The people who share your living space can become some of your first friends on campus. Housing and Residential Services provides more information about roommates, including how to indicate a preferred roommate and how to contact your roommate before move-in day.
Living with others requires open communication and mutual respect. Here are some tips to improve your roommate experience and help resolve any issues that may arise.
Communicate with Each Other
By now, you've come to know your roommate(s). Take advantage of that and use open communication to voice your concerns. Some of the issues might be awkward to talk about but having those discussions before issues escalate can lead to quicker solutions.
Set Up a Roommate Agreement
Roommate agreements are an effective method to set expectations and navigate living with others. If you have one, use it as a starting point for discussion and to address any challenges you might be facing. If you don't, it’s not too late to set up your roommate agreement.
Talk to Your Community Advisor
If you're living in a residence hall, your community advisor (CA) is trained to help you make it a great experience. Talk with your CA if you need advice on addressing a concern with a roommate.
Contact the Ombuds Office
If you're stuck and nothing seems to be working, reach out to the Ombuds Office. The Ombuds Office is a place for you to share questions, concerns and challenges with a neutral party outside of normal NIU administrative channels. The team offers a confidential, nonjudgmental and impartial perspective.

“One of the ways I made great connections was through studying with my cluster-mates in Patterson. Living in the Honors House was a great choice, and I am so glad I decided to live there, because I have met some amazing people.”Reece Piper,
