Career Readiness Tips
Get a head start on your career while you're a student at NIU.
Tip 1
Use Career Services Early and Often
Career Services offers a range of valuable resources, including resume reviews, mock interviews, career coaching, job search strategies and employer connections. Don't wait until senior year; start exploring opportunities early. Begin by setting up an appointment with a career advisor.
Tip 2
Research and Plan Your Career Path
Our Huskie Career Launchpad helps you develop skills and gain experiences valued by employers and graduate schools. It also allows you to promote those achievements with digital badges you can display on platforms like LinkedIn.
In addition, you can use our digital career counselor to explore career options and track employment outcomes, as well as understand industry expectations, salary trends and job market demands.
Tip 3
Gain Experience with Internships and Campus Involvement
Employers look for experience. Participate in jobs and internships, student organizations, research projects, leadership opportunities or volunteer work to develop transferable skills and benefit from hands-on learning.
You can also explore our virtual job simulations. These online experiences allow you to see what it's like to work for top employers in a variety of roles.
Tip 4
Build Your Professional Network
Networking can be the key to career success. Attend career fairs, connect with alumni and use LinkedIn to expand your professional network.
Huskie Career Launchpad offers a Career Exploration Passport digital badge focused on job and internship fairs and other networking events to help connect you with employers.
Tip 5
Develop Your Professional and Communication Skills
We have resources to help you build skills in resume and cover letter writing, interview techniques and workplace communication.
If your intended path includes graduate study or professional licensure, we offer free test prep courses to help you succeed on exams like the GRE, LSAT and MCAT.
Huskie Career Launchpad tracks your involvement in career-building activities outside the classroom, enabling you to develop a plan, gain skills and build connections for your future career.
