What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was growing up I wanted to be a meteorologist, and I am pursuing meteorology as my major.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is meteorology, and I have been interested in the weather since I was very little. Whenever a storm was on its way, I was tracking it on radar and sitting on my front porch. I have always had a passion for weather, and I look forward to pursuing something that I really enjoy doing.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Something that I found pleasantly surprising was how many resources there are for students. There are so many different organizations/clubs/resources on campus when you need something. Whether you have a question about housing, advising or your math homework, there are always people here, happy to help.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
One of the ways I made great connections was through studying with my cluster-mates in Patterson. Living in the Honors House was a great choice, and I am so glad I decided to live there, because I have met some amazing people. One of the other ways I met new people was by attending honors events. There are so many great honors students I have gotten to know.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am currently involved with Research Rookies, and I am so excited to research something in my field of study. I have received the privilege to develop my research skills as a freshman and meet many new students and faculty along the way. This will without a doubt help me succeed after my time at NIU. I have also been attending the weekly events at the NIU Weather Center, where fellow students create a forecast for the university for the upcoming week and gain experience with creating forecasts.
What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The University Honors Program has been such a huge support to us as we started our collegiate career. They made it clear if there was anything we needed, school-related or not, we could come and talk to them. They have been a great support group to have in my first semester here at NIU.
What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
Suitable is an app used to track upcoming events/opportunities and your progress in a specific area. You can gain points for completed tasks or events, which then get you badges through the app. This has helped me a lot to realize the experiences I need to graduate and how to stay on track to achieve them.
What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
What I enjoy most about the Honors Program are the students and faculty I am surrounded by. Everyone is so kind and willing to lend a hand if you ever need anything. It is so nice to collaborate with other like-minded individuals.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Kim Gatz was my communications professor. She was one of the most positive people I have ever met. She always created a great environment for us to give speeches and always gave fantastic feedback.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class regularly has helped me stay on track with homework and other activities in the class. It also helps you understand the class better because your professor is there to walk you through it if you have any questions or concerns. Attending class will help me learn the most information I can and will greatly benefit my future.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is definitely the Holmes Student Center. Not only can you study in break-out rooms, but you can also grab Starbucks or Qdoba while you are there!
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My advice is to look and see what clubs and extracurriculars are offered. Also look into the scholarship and fellowship opportunities within the university.
Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because I get to push myself to become a better student and individual. I am so grateful I get to attend NIU and pursue my dream job of becoming a meteorologist.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I manage my time with a calendar so I can plan out my week and make sure I do not forget anything important. This way you are very organized, especially when finals are near and you get very busy.
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events on campus by frequently checking my email. I always get emails about different sports games/activities or job fairs that are being held across campus. I also follow a number of campus resources on social media, which also keep me very informed.
What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax or recharge, I take a walk around campus or watch one of my favorite shows!
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
One of my favorite hobbies is pickleball. I love playing pickleball, and it's so fun to play with friends. I also enjoy playing golf and volleyball.
