Preparing for a Career Fair

Get the most out of a career or internship fair and set yourself up for success.

Attending a career fair is a valuable opportunity to learn about different industries, make important professional contacts, practice your interview skills and learn about the job market, both for your major and other fields. Here are some tips to help you have a positive, beneficial experience.

Tip 1

Do Your Research

Learn about the companies and organizations that are attending. Visit their websites, focusing especially on those with whom you'd like to speak. Be sure you check out their job and internship listings, so you'll know what they have available. With so much information online, it's easy to come prepared.

Tip 2

Develop Some Questions

Prepare a short list of basic questions you can ask to start a conversation. For example: What’s the company culture like? Are there training and professional development opportunities? Do you hire interns for permanent jobs?

Tip 3

Get Comfortable Introducing Yourself

As you've probably heard, it’s important to develop an "elevator pitch," a short statement you can use to introduce yourself and begin a conversation. For example: "Hi, I'm Jackson. I'm a junior majoring in finance, and I'm interested in the banking and investment fields." Develop a few versions and practice them in advance, so you'll feel confident at the career fair.

Tip 4

Dress for the Job You Want

First impressions are important. Unless other attire is specified, business casual is the best choice. Choose clothing that helps you feel comfortable and confident, as well as appropriate shoes, since you might be standing for several hours. Quick tip: It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Not sure if you have the right clothes? Check out Barsema’s Closet, which is located in Barsema Hall and provides NIU students with access to low-cost professional clothing. Another option is the Huskie Closet. It's located in the Chick Evans Field House and offers free business and casual clothing and shoes to NIU students.

Tip 5

Come Prepared

Arrive early if you can. Bring several printed-out copies of your resume. Carry a notebook with your questions and information about employers you want to visit.

Tip 6

Listen and Learn

If you're just beginning your internship or career search or feel intimidated by the event’s format, that's OK! Observe other students. Be attentive. Listen to how they ask and answer questions. Remember to show enthusiasm when interacting with recruiters. They were once where you are now. Stay positive and be yourself.

Tip 7

Follow Up

Did you have a great conversation with a recruiter or learn something interesting about a company? Send a handwritten note or an email to the people you met. Mention something about your conversation to help them remember you.

Keep learning after the event with Career Services. They offer resources and guidance to help you along your career journey, including career counseling, job search support, interview preparation and networking opportunities.
