Service Opportunities

Student involvement provides a multitude of service opportunities within the NIU campus with various service projects and service events. Student involvement also has service opportunities through a variety of different service partners in the DeKalb/Sycamore area providing students with the chance to make a difference not only on NIU campus but also in our community.

What is Community Service?

Community service is defined as unpaid volunteer work that is intended to benefit the public and community, meaning not every service is considered to be community service.

For example:

  • Paid work
  • Personal chores or family duties
  • Donating funds
  • Political lobbying
  • Religious activities/conducting worship
  • Organizational duties
  • Fundraising for organizations
  • Membership recruitment for organizations
  • Meetings related to organization business
