While bicycles, electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) can be a quick and efficient way to navigate campus, they also can be an easy and tempting target to thieves. Since NIU does not offer a bike-share program on campus, here are some tips to help protect your personal investment and ride safely.
Security
- Lock securely: Always use a high-security lock, like a U-lock or a heavy-duty chain, and lock the main frame to a bike rack. Avoid locking only the stem. Housing residents should review residence hall policies in the handbook.
- Remove valuable parts: Remove any easily detached accessories like phone holders or extra lights.
- Park smartly: Choose well-lit, high-traffic areas with surveillance cameras whenever possible.
- Use anti-theft devices:
- Install a GPS tracker or use a discreet tracking device like an AirTag.
- Consider locks with built-in alarms.
- Engrave your contact information on the bike or scooter and personalize it with stickers to deter resale.
- Take a photo of your bike or scooter and register it with the NIU Police Department
Safety
- Wear protective gear: Always wear a helmet that fits properly. Reflective clothing, gloves, and closed-toe shoes are also recommended.
- Inspect your scooter: Before each ride, check that the brakes work effectively and the bike or scooter is in good condition.
- Stay visible: Ensure your bike’s or scooter's lights are working, and consider adding extra lights or reflective tape, especially for night riding.
- Ride defensively: Be aware of your surroundings, obey traffic laws, and avoid distractions like using your phone.
- Ride solo: Do not ride with two people on a single bike or scooter.
