The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning supports the larger mission of Northern Illinois University to empower students through educational excellence and experiential learning by facilitating and promoting faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative inquiry experiences for all NIU students.
Our mission is to promote transformational student learning by encouraging, supporting, and celebrating undergraduate participation in research, scholarship, and creative activities. To achieve this mission, we conduct programs and events that facilitate research opportunities and experiences for NIU undergraduates in all majors and class levels.
We help students discover their own research paths
We provide resources for students undertaking research projects
We share and disseminate new knowledge gained through research
We pursue partnerships and seek collaborations with departments throughout the university to promote excellence, enrich the research experience and publicize the many resources available to students on campus
The Northern Illinois University is a member of the Council on Undergraduate Research (cur), a national organization whose mission is to support and promote high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.
We are also a non-lsamp partner institution with the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence building upon a shared commitment in broadening participation of historically excluded students in STEM fields.
