Review of Programs and Centers

NIU’s program and center review process provides a framework for reflection and continuous improvement of student learning and program/center design and operations. These review processes also support compliance with NIU’s institutional accreditor (Higher Learning Commission), NIU’s programmatic and disciplinary accreditors, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s expectations.

Assessment Plans

New Assessment Plan

All new degree programs must create an Assessment Plan as part of the degree program approval process.

Revise Existing Assessment Plan

Programs are required to submit updated Assessment Plans as part of the review cycle. However, off-cycle updates to Assessment Plans can be made at any time. Current Assessment Plans can be accessed on the SharePoint site (NIU login required).

Use the academic degree programs assessment plan guidelines and template (DOCX) to create a new plan or revise an existing plan.

Reporting and Review

Annual Assessment Summary Report (ASR)

Due April 1

What is the Annual Assessment Summary Report (ASR)?

The ASR documents and serves as a tool to guide program-level assessment of student learning outcomes and decision-making for continuous program improvement. In alignment with each program’s assessment plan, each year, evidence of student learning related to the student learning outcomes are added to the document, ultimately providing a 4-year longitudinal record of assessment data and decisions and actions following from analysis and discussion of the data. The document also serves as a tool for monitoring and reflecting on impacts of actions taken in previous years to inform decisions about future action.

University Assessment Panel (UAP) Review

What is UAP Review?

The purpose of this review is to provide consultative feedback and support from colleagues across campus.
