Institutional Research conducts research, prepares analytical studies and reports. Tasked with gathering, summarizing and analyzing data relevant to students, faculty, staff, costs, programs and policies. We conduct activities in order to meet the data and analytical needs of the entire university.

Decision Support and Analysis

Decision Support and Analysis serves as a university contact for institutional data/reporting (internal, limited external), Business Intelligence reporting/dashboards, analytics and decision support related to areas of revenue, cost, productivity and efficiency. The unit promotes a highly collaborative, client-based model, providing reporting and analysis across a broad consumer base, including that of division leaders, deans/associate deans and chairs/directors.

The project portfolio includes data/reporting deliverables, statistical analysis and analytical services, project/process management and decision support capacity related to faculty/instructional staffing resources, faculty research/scholarship, peer benchmarking, budget/financial analysis, forecasting and performance and outcome based measures.

Delaware Cost Study (National Study of Instructional Cost and Productivity)

The Delaware Cost Study includes a national data-sharing consortium embracing over 300 four-year colleges and universities across the United States. The foci of data-sharing activities are detailed analyses of budgeted instructional activities by faculty/instructional staff category, instructional costs and externally funded scholarly activity and public service activity, all at the level of the academic programmatic discipline.

Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Data Center

The IPEDS Data Center provides for the retrieval and analysis of data on colleges and universities. The Data Center includes a wide-range of functional options, including the ability to compare institutions side-by-side, construct customized data sets, download full data files and create different statistical summaries and trend reports. NIUReports – Standardized, Aggregate Data/Reporting Repository

NIUReports serves as a central repository of data/reporting including that of recruitment/admissions, retention and enrollment/registration. Administered by Decision Support and Analysis, this internal data/reporting repository facilitates a more efficient distribution of key data/reporting to university leaders and promotes the usage of the underlying data/reporting to the broader university community.

Commissions, Committees and Classifications

Commission on Information, Measurement and Analysis

Leveraging from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities research, policy, and advocacy organization of public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems and higher education organizations, Commission on Information, Measurement and Analysis (CIMA) creates communities of practice around effective and efficient use of data and fiscal resources to guide campus planning and decision-making.

Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education

The Carnegie Classification provides a classification of public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and higher education organizations. Derived from empirical data on colleges and universities, the Carnegie Classification is regularly updated to reflect changes among colleges and universities. This framework has been widely used in the study of higher education, both as a way to represent and control for institutional differences and also in the design of research studies to ensure adequate representation of sampled institutions, students or faculty.

Classification of Instructional Programs

The Classification of Instructional Programs provides a taxonomic scheme that supports the accurate tracking and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity.

NIU Data Management Committee

The Data Management Committee is NIU's data governance for data and reporting. Composed of lead data/reporting and analysis university leaders, the committee's scope includes information management for university institutional data assets and institutional information as defined in the NIU Institutional Data Management Standards documentation.

Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum

The Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum is a network of higher education colleagues dedicated to promoting the sharing of knowledge and best practices regarding knowledge management in colleges and universities, including building data warehouses, developing institutional reporting strategies and providing decision support.

Illinois Board of Higher Education - State Performance Funding

The Illinois Board of Higher Education – State Performance Funding Committee assists with linking the goals of the Illinois Public Agenda for College and Career Success to the state's higher education budgeting process. Performance funding is an important component of the state's plan to meet the Complete College American (CCA) goal that by 2025, 60 percent of Illinois adults will have a college degree or credential. To that end, the committee is to assist the Illinois Board of Higher Education in devising a system for allocating state resources to public institutions of higher education based upon performance in achieving state goals related to student success and certification and degree completion.
