Choral Auditions

We welcome you to audition for Concert Choir and Chamber Choir for the 2024-25 academic year. An audition is not required for University Chorus.

Our choral ensembles are open to all NIU students. We look forward to meeting you at your audition. Returning students, are required to audition. This audition is your opportunity to demonstrate your own musical and vocal growth since the last time we heard you sing alone. We want to hear what you have accomplished over the summer!

Audition dates:

  • Sunday, August 25, 2-5 p.m.
  • Monday August 26, noon-4 p.m.

Register for your audition.

Course Schedules and Rehearsals

As you plan your course schedule, take note of rehearsal times. For example, if you’re auditioning for Concert Choir, it’s wise to keep those rehearsal times open in your schedule. Though it’s possible to change your schedule after you get to campus, it's easier to keep rehearsal times open in your schedule in advance.

Audition Materials

At your audition, we’ll ask you to sing measures 16-29 of Anton Bruckner’s “Os Justi,” as indicated in the score. Prepare the part that aligns with your preferred voice placement (SATB). Although they appear simple, the lines have great room for expressivity, so add your own musical expression. For reference, listen to the Stanford Singers perform “Os Justi.”

We’ll also ask you to sing some basic triads, sight read a simple phrase and do some vocalese to hear your full range.

If you have any questions, please email Eric A. Johnson, D.M.A., at ejohnsn@niu.edu or Mary Lynn Doherty, Ph.D., at mdoherty@niu.edu. We are looking forward to making music with you this year!

Concert Choir (MUSE 345/645)

Monday/Wednesday, 2-2:50 p.m. and Tuesday/Thursday, 2-3:15 p.m.

This is an auditioned large ensemble. The group has both music majors and non-majors with good music skills. Many of the non-music majors come from strong HS choral programs and they are looking for the challenges and rewards of advanced choral music. Concert Choir often performs for area high schools and short run-out concerts. In the spring, Concert Choir often performs large choral orchestral works with the NIU Philharmonic. This ensemble is conducted by Eric A. Johnson, D.M.A.

Chamber Choir (MUSE 341/641)

Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 1-1:50 p.m.

This is a select mixed vocal ensemble of 16 to 20 singers that focuses on advanced ensemble repertoire. Personal performance expectations are high as singers are often assigned one or two voices per part. Chamber Choir often performs off campus events representing the university as various official functions. Enrollment is open to all NIU students through the audition process, but there is a high degree of music reading proficiency and outside class independent work expected. This ensemble is conducted by Eric A. Johnson, D.M.A.

University Chorus (MUSE 342/642)

Monday/Wednesday, 4-5:15 p.m.

This is a non-auditioned SATB choir. University Chorus is often a mix of instrumental music majors and singers from other majors across campus who had great high school choral experiences and they just want to keep singing in college. This ensemble is conducted by Mary Lynn Doherty, Ph.D.
