The School of Music at Northern Illinois University combines the best aspects of a conservatory setting with all of the opportunities and benefits of a major research university. Our more than 60 faculty are nationally, and internationally, recognized performers and mentors dedicated to supporting students and helping them realize their potential as music artists, educators and scholars.

Our location, just an hour west of Chicago, provides students with unparalleled cultural resources, and there are lots of great places close to campus.

Students in the NIU School of Music have the opportunity to perform in a wide range of ensembles, including jazz, orchestra, wind ensemble, choirs, steelband and ensembles devoted to the music of Indonesia, China and the Middle East. The school hosts both a New Music Festival and a World Music Festival each fall. Students also have the opportunity to study recording arts.
