Academic and Community Programs

The NIU School of Music is home to the internationally renowned NIU Jazz Ensemble and NIU Steelband as well as the Avalon String Quartet, described by the Chicago Tribune as "an ensemble that invites you – ears, mind and spirit – into its music."

Degrees and Programs

At NIU’s School of Music, undergraduate degrees include the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with emphases in composition, education and performance or the Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.) that offers the flexibility to pursue opportunities in recording arts or music and another area of study. There is also a minor in music. Graduate programs include the Master of Music and a post-master's Performer’s Certificate.

All programs in the School of Music are limited admission, requiring a music audition and music application. Space is limited and competitive. Make sure to review all application and audition requirements and apply early to meet deadlines.

Artistry, Vision and Community

Artistry is what drives us. A world-class faculty with a passion for teaching, for true excellence and the cultivation of music in our society through the continued success and fulfillment of our students.

Vision is what guides us. The ability to recognize and anticipate the ever-changing landscape of music and the foresight to prepare our students for what lies ahead.

Community is who we are. A cutting-edge school of music, 60 minutes from the vibrant city of Chicago, in which our students are mentored in an exceptionally close-knit environment and offered rich and unique opportunities for study.

Community School of the Arts

NIU is also home to the Community School of Arts, which provides all members of NIU and the surrounding communities the opportunity to take lessons. Community students also participate in high school clinics and attend numerous summer camps in art, music and theatre.
