Undergraduate Admissions

NIU Student Emily Schaumberg.

Welcome to the NIU School of Music! We're glad that you are interested in studying with us. At NIU, you get the best of everything - personalized attention, small school benefits, all while being at a major research institution with large university resources and experiences. You'll work one-on-one with world renown faculty who continue to perform across the country and around the world. Being 65 miles west of Chicago, you have access to the city with its musical and cultural experience but are in a hometown community that allows you to hone in and focus on your craft.

There are many ways to be involved with our School of Music. Whether you're interested in being a major, a minor or just being involved in ensembles, there's a place for you.

Admission to the School of Music is limited and competitive. If you are interested in being a music major, there is a two-step application process.

  1. Apply for general admission to NIU.
    • Be mindful of priority academic scholarship deadlines.
    • You will need to have applied to NIU by the time of your audition. You are not required to have been admitted for general admission, but we encourage you to apply early.
  2. Apply and Audition for the School of Music.
      • Complete your supplemental application.
      • Submit two letters of letters of recommendation.
        • Familial references are not accepted. References will be emailed a separate form directly upon the completion of this application. Please confirm with your references their willingness to complete this form prior to listing them. At least one reference should be able to speak to your musical capabilities, i.e. high school ensemble director, private lesson instructor, etc. Recommendation forms are due prior to auditions.
      • Register for your audition/interview.
        • Auditions are held in February.
        • Please review studio audition requirements.

Spring applicants should contact Brigid Findley (Crawford) at bcrawford@niu.edu to schedule their audition. Applicants must submit all application materials and complete an audition/interview prior to the December 1 spring application deadline.

If you are unable to attend one of our scheduled audition days, you must receive permission to schedule a separate audition or submit a video audition. Please contact Brigid Findley (Crawford) with questions at bcrawford@niu.edu.

The priority deadline for fall applicants to submit all application materials is: Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

Following the last formal audition date (February 18), applications and auditions will be reviewed as there is space available in studios or until May 15. Please contact Brigid Findley (Crawford) at bcrawford@niu.edu regarding appropriate next steps in the application and audition process. We encourage you to apply and audition as soon as possible for full consideration.
