If you're an undocumented student, you're not eligible for federal financial aid. We advise you to not fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Instead, you can apply for financial aid with the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid. There are also many scholarships you can apply to receive.
If you're a U.S. citizen whose parents are undocumented but file income taxes with an ITIN, you can fill out a FAFSA. For more information, contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office.
We understand that everyone's situation is unique. For assistance, contact Sandy López, Ph.D., at slopez1@niu.edu.
Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid
If you're an undocumented student, you can apply for financial aid from NIU and the state of Illinois by submitting an Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid. You must meet eligibility requirements.
Financial aid from NIU is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Illinois MAP grants are awarded based on need and satisfactory academic progress.
Huskie Pledge Grant
If you're graduating from an Illinois high school with an overall GPA of at least 3.0, you may qualify for a Huskie Pledge grant. This means you could pay no tuition or fees your first year at NIU—and possibly beyond.
To be considered for a Huskie Pledge grant, you must apply to NIU and submit an Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid by the priority deadline. Read more about Huskie Pledge eligibility requirements.
NIU also offers financial support in the form of the Undocumented Immediate Assistance Fund and the Huskies Helping Grant. For more information or to apply, email slopez1@niu.edu.
