If you're an English major or minor, you must demonstrate proficiency in the fundamentals of English grammar by successfully completing ENGL 207 or passing the Grammar Exemption Exam.
The exam covers basic usage conventions of formal written English and traditional grammatical terminology. You’ll have 90 minutes to complete the multiple-choice test in Blackboard. You can only take it once.
You should take the exam no later than the end of the first semester in which you enroll for any course to be included in your major or minor. If you don’t take the exam your first semester, you're expected to take ENGL 207 in your second semester in order to enroll in other English courses.
Please note: If you’re an undergraduate candidate for admission to the Secondary Licensure in English Language Arts Program, you’re not eligible to take the exam.
A recommended study guide is the textbook “English Grammar: A Descriptive Linguistic Approach, Third Edition,” by Gulsat Aygen. A copy is available on a two-hour reserve at Founders Memorial Library.
Results
Once you complete the exam in Blackboard, you’ll receive your score immediately. In order to pass, you must answer 53 or more questions correctly (out of 75).
