One of the best ways to handle the stress of college life is through fitness.
As a Huskie, you automatically have access to NIU Recreation and can simply use your OneCard ID to enter. Use our fitness machines, participate in intramural sports, swim laps, rent a court or outdoor equipment, or take an adventure trip. Group classes, nutrition coaching, personal trainers and more are available for a fee.
Lift weights, squeeze in some cardio or join a pickup game group fitness class or personal training session at our Recreation Center—featuring multipurpose and racquetball courts, a three-lane track, a TRX room, a rock climbing wall and much more.
Like adventure? No matter the season or weather, you’ll find unique opportunities such as kayaking, hiking and ice skating, just to name a few, through NIU Adventures. Or join us on one of our day, weekend or week-long adventure trips . Our variety of adventures—everything from exploring Wyoming to crate-climbing at the Rec—offer experiences of a lifetime.
With more than 40 intramural sports and activities for men’s, women’s and co-recreational leagues, we offer both competitive and recreational opportunities to be active and involved, meet new people and have fun. From flag football to sand volleyball to yard games and so much more, you’ll have plenty of choices.
Our student-run Sport Clubs are a great way to stay healthy and active as you compete against other schools. Choose from a variety of sports including soccer, baseball, volleyball, softball, archery, lacrosse, fencing, table tennis and many more. More than 500 students—some active in sports in high school, others just looking to try something new and learn more—actively participate in our clubs.
"The Recreation Center is my favorite place to go to relax. I enjoy deadlifting, rock climbing and sitting around in the sauna. I also enjoy recharging through meditation, napping and praying."
