The Huskie Marching Band regularly partners with area high school marching bands to enhance the learning opportunities for high school musicians. We hold several events each year, in which we invite high school bands to participate.
High School Band Day
September 27, 2025
Once a year, high school bands are invited to join us on the field during halftime of a Huskie football game to perform a halftime show after a morning of rehearsals. This is a great chance for the students in your band to participate in a collegiate band performance.
To participate in NIU Band Day, please download and read the 2025 Band Day letter to directors and complete the 2025 Band Day Registration form online.
Wind Conducting Symposium
February 28, 2026
This annual symposium is for current and aspiring band directors. All levels of conductors are invited to attend and participate. Sessions will receive feedback from NIU clinicians. Learn more about the Wind Conducting Symposium.
Red and Black Fall Classic
Administered by the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, this fall marching band competition allows high school bands to showcase their skills in a judged competition or for comments only. The Huskie Marching Band also performs in exhibition as part of the event. Visit the Phantom Regiment website for more information or to register.
Concert Band Festival
This event is also hosted by our friends from Rockford, the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Music education is a big part of their mission, we are pleased to partner with them to host our annual concert band festival. The event is non-competitive, in that no ratings or scores are awarded. Participating bands get to perform in the acoustically wonderful Boutell Concert Hall on the NIU Campus, benefit from recorded comments from a blue-ribbon panel of music educators, and enjoy a live clinic with one of the clinicians after their performance. Learn more on Phantom Regiment's website.
