National Guard Helped Shape Mia Mapa’s Debt-free Journey

When Mia Mapa crossed the stage to receive her nursing degree from Northern Illinois University, she carried with her a sense of freedom. Her accomplishment wasn’t just about earning her diploma—it was also about doing it entirely debt free.

“I am not a traditional college student,” Mapa said just prior to graduation. “I commuted to school, and there were times where I had to put a pause in my classes. But I was determined to finish without taking out any loans.”

That determination took root years before college even began. In high school, she enlisted in the Army National Guard, a decision that would shape both her education and her future.

“The Illinois National Guard grant paid for my college tuition while serving,” she explains. “While being in the military part time, I also worked as a caregiver, phlebotomist and patient-care technician.”

The combination of military benefits, work and financial aid formed the foundation of her debt-free journey.

“These scholarships and grants helped me tremendously in not taking out any student loans while being a full-time student,” Mapa said.

Having first come to the United States at the age of 12, she was also motivated by family.

“I did not want to add more responsibility to my mom, who is my family’s breadwinner,” Mapa said.

Graduating without debt has given Mapa confidence and flexibility for the future.

“It’s helped me feel at ease with obtaining a higher education,” she said. “After college, I can focus on travelling, saving up for a house, and maintaining my emergency fund without worrying about paying for student loans.”

Mapa hopes future NIU students see that debt-free graduation is achievable, especially with early planning and persistence. Her advice is simple but grounded in experience.

“Don’t worry too much about having a typical timeline,” Mapa said. “Sometimes life happens, and everything happens for a reason.”
