Fellowships and External Awards

Explore national fellowships and external awards you can apply for to further your education and research. Governments, foundations and other groups fund national fellowships. Applying will give you insights into who you are and what is most important to you. Whether or not you're selected as a recipient, you'll gain transferable skills and benefits just by completing the application process.

We actively recruit for the following national fellowships and scholarships:

Student Fulbright Program

Fund your study, research or teaching abroad with the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Learn more about the types of Fulbright awards for graduate students and students who recently completed a bachelor's degree. For more information contact etatkins@niu.edu.

Boren Scholarships

Boren Scholarships provide funding to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. For more information contact the Study Abroad Office at niuabroad@niu.edu.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply for a Gilman Scholarship to study or intern abroad. For more information contact the Study Abroad Office at niuabroad@niu.edu.
