Udall Scholarship Application Timeline

You can begin your application for a Udall Scholarship your sophomore or junior year. To get started, review the who should apply and frequently asked questions.

Tasks and Due Dates

Tasks Due Dates Notes
Submit campus application Dec. 1 Submit an application to let us know of your interest. (Application includes past awards, research, professional aspirations, having a faculty sponsor/mentor)
Notification of application status Dec. 5 Applicants will be notified if they have received provisional institutional support.
Write first draft of personal essay and application questions Jan. 16

800 words or less essay describing how you exemplify Udall's core characteristics, submit to mentor for feedback.

Request letters of recommendation Jan. 23 Three references that can talk to your academic achievements, environmental contributions or personal character.
Write second draft of Essay Jan. 30 Use feedback from mentor to make revisions and then submit draft two to the Writing Center for suggestions.
Request Official transcripts  Feb. 6 Get official transcripts from Registration and Records to be submitted electronically to cstorey2@NIU.edu.
Write third draft of Essay Feb. 20 Send polished draft with changes from mentor and the Writing Center to honors staff for review.
Submit application Mar. 2 Submit application, essay, three letters of recommendation and transcripts.
Finalists notified May 2 Students will be notified if they are a finalist to be awarded.
