If you are an F-1 student, and you are maintaining your immigration status (which means following the rules and regulations of the immigration service), you may work on campus once you enroll for your first semester. J-1 students may work under certain circumstances. Student workers on campus are permitted to work 20 hours per week during the semester; full-time work is permitted during breaks. Please make an appointment with International Student and Scholar Services for questions about employment.
Human Resource Services maintains a listing of available student job opportunities. You may also wish to inquire with Housing and Residential Services and University Libraries.
Graduate assistantships provide students with a stipend and full-tuition waiver. Approximately 25 percent of degree-seeking graduate students receive assistantships. Before you apply for an assistantship, be sure to read these tips provided by NIU's Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning.
